Interracial Inquiries: Overreacting

May 10, 2017

This is a special Q & A segment of The Hamster Village, called “Interracial Inquiries,” where host Nathan Brannon answers a question from you, the listeners! Nathan enlists the help of previous guests, to chime in with their own perspectives and experiences. This is our third installment, and last question with Shain and Sarah; an interracial couple from the episode “Half & Half.” Here is the question that we attempt to answer:

Nathan. My child’s hair & eyes are more like my wife’s (Who is White) than they are like mine. It seems like those features are what garners the most compliments. It feels kind of like a backhanded comment towards me sometimes. I know I shouldn’t take it that way, but I do sometimes. Am I overreacting?"

Interracial Inquiries: Monkey Onesie

March 23, 2017

This is a special Q & A segment of The Hamster Village, called “Interracial Inquiries,” where host Nathan Brannon answers a question from you, the listeners. Nathan enlists the help of previous guests to chime in from their own perspectives as well. For this question, Nathan is joined by Shain Brenden and Sarah Frazier; an interracial couple from the episode “Half & Half.” Here is the question that they attempt to answer:

“Hey Nathan. Can you help me out? My husband & I just had a beautiful baby boy. As a gift, my mother-in-law bought him a baby onesie with a huge MONKEY on the chest. I would be fine with it, if I weren’t one of the only Black people in the neighborhood. I can’t give it back, and I’d be VERY uncomfortable dressing him up in it, and taking him around the town. How would you handle this?”

“What Else Ya Got?”

March 9, 2017

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." - Maya Angelou

In this episode, we sit down with biracial comedian & actor, KT Tatara. We follow his life, growing up in a Japanese/White household in Northern Virginia, to an elementary school with children from all over the world, and then to a predominantly White middle/high-school. We talk about the lessons, and skills, that those experiences taught him along the way. We also look at how those experiences molded him into the accomplished comedian & actor that he is today. This is a compelling episode about the benefits of finding the true character in a person beneath their physical appearance, or where they come from!

Kujichagulia: “Self Determination”

February 23, 2017

“If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too…” – Rudyard Kipling

We decided to title this episode “Kujichagulia,” or “Self Determination.” We sit down with mixed comedian, Matt Duckett, to talk about how he determined for himself who he was, throughout his childhood & young adult life. We look at the role that class (and to a lesser extent, location) plays in racial identity. We also address the long held stereotype that an interracial child equates to the dismissal or weakening of a parent’s heritage. The best part about identity is that WE are the ones that have the power to construct it; all anyone else can do is try to influence our decisions. It’s a phenomenal episode! Check it out, tell your friends, “like” our pages, & subscribe; Podbean, iTunes, Google Play, whatever you use!

Also, check out the comedy of Matt Duckett. He is funny, and does a great job weaving his life with his art; which can sometimes be hard to find these days. If he is in your city, check him out! You can find him at mattduckett.net

Team Work

February 14, 2017

Happy Valentines!

Today, we salute the “teammates” in all of our lives. Not just those in the romantic sense, but those who support us in our endeavors every day. Regardless of whether you are spoken for, or single, we salute those who keep you going!

In this episode, we sit down with Preacher & Janine. With Janine being a professional singer, and Preacher being a professional comedian, it can be hard enough just to have a relationship, not to mention adding race into the mix. We chat about what created a strong connection between them, how they spend time together in a fast-paced entertainment industry, and how their relationship is affected by past experiences in other parts of the world.

Also, Nathan sends a message to his wonderful wife, and Preacher works out his vocals to open up the show!

Half & Half

February 1, 2017

You know those couples that go out in public, wearing the same outfits? This is not one of those couples!... Well, they might be; we only sat with them for about 2 hours. It would probably be pretty easy to hide something like that for a couple hours… Regardless, this couple is very unique and interesting!

We sat down with Sarah & Shain in this episode; they are not only an interracial couple, they are also both multiracial. They give a very honest insight into the experiences of mixed people, as well as how those experiences are affected when you are married to another mixed person.

We also pose a question, from one of our listeners, to Sarah & Shain. Below is the text of the question that was asked:

Hi Nathan.

I am Latino, and my wife is White (with a German background). We just had a little baby boy, and I am concerned about him knowing about his heritage. I really want him to know about my side, but I do not want to overshadow her side. How do I strike the right balance? Thank you.

JM

Love Can Wait

January 24, 2017

In the words of The SOS Band, "Baby, we can do it/ Take the time, do it right.."

In this episode, we sit down with Christopher & Rachel to talk about the many different aspects of their relationship, which developed over a span of years before it became romantic. We explore what made them wait so long before dating, what happened after they got together, and the role that each of thier families play in their relationship. With Chris being a child of Chinese immigrants, and Rachel coming from Irish/German descent, we examine what happened when both families came together, and how those interactions changed them all for the better. We also get a sense of their feelings toward the current racial climate in our society, as well as their hopes/concerns for the future. It's a great episode, and example, for new interracial couples! Take a listen.

Caveat: In a part of the episode, Nathan refers to Chris as "China-man". It was referencing Chris's old radio DJ name, and not just some out of the blue, derogatory comment. Unfortunately, there was not enough room for the explanation of the name, but will be released in a later archived version.

With Both Feet

January 16, 2017

Author Antonio Machado once said "Travelers, there is no path, paths are made by walking." Likewise, My mom used to say, "the only way to know you like ketchup on your burger, is to try one with mustard."

When we chose to move in a direction that is new or foreign to us, it can be so easy to talk ourselves out of going any further. It's in our nature; we feel compelled to weigh the things that we possess (our knowledge up to that point) against the prospect of having that taken away or destroyed. Unfortunately, growth does not come about this way. Venturing into the unknown does not only open us up to the prospect of unforseen rewards, it also helps to put that which is already known into perspective. Ask any pioneer, in any field, and they will tell you that they didn't get where they are by going through life fearful of what may come, but by jumping into the unknown "with both feet!"

In this episode, we sit down with Fran & Simon; a first-time interracial couple out of New Jersey. We explore how this "both-feet" mentality has underscored their entire relationship. We also look at how it has created a wealth of wonderful experiences not only for eachother, but for each of their families. This episode is filled with optimism, and is a perfect way to start of 2017.

Also, thanks to composer Kielen King for creating new music for the Hamster Village! He's great, and you should definitely check him out at www.starpilotmusic.com!

Olga & Mark

May 9, 2016

In this episode, we sit down with Mark (Irish/Norwegian) & Olga Sanchez-Saltveit (Latina, Columbia). Of course we talk about HOW they met, which is another very interesting online-dating story, but we also dig into WHY they met. We explore their childhoods & family dynamics; what influences growing up made them open to relationships outside of their race? With both of them being in the entertainment industry (Olga as an actress/theater director, and Mark as a stand-up comedian), we explore how the skills gained from their relationship overlap with their craft, and visa-versa. Also, there is such a thing as Norwegian Language Camp, did you know that?! Oofta!
